Moti Jayanti being observed today

KATHMANDU: The 159th birth anniversary of the renowned national figure Yubakavi (the Youth Poet) Motiram Bhatta is being observed today with various literary events.

Bhatta, born on Kushe Aunsi (National Father’s Day) in 1923 BS (1866 AD) and who passed away on the same day in 1953 BS (1896 AD), had a brief but impactful life of 30 years.

He is celebrated for his significant contributions to Nepali literature, particularly for his role in immortalizing Adikavi Bhanubhakta Acharya through his biography.

In addition to his literary achievements, Bhatta is credited with introducing the printing press to Nepal and pioneering the use of Ghazals in Nepali literature.

He also published Bhanubhakta’s Ramayana in 1941 BS. His efforts significantly enriched the Nepali language and enhanced its capacity for literary expression.

Among Bhatta’s notable works are ‘Bhanubhaktako Jeewan Charitra,’ ‘Priyadarshika,’ and ‘Pikdut.’ His establishment of the printing press laid the foundation for journalism in Nepal.

In conjunction with the observance, various organizations, including the Nepal Education Council, are holding special programs.

Notably, Rastriya Samachar Samiti (RSS) is officially launching its round-the-clock Nepali news service today, following a trial run that began on August 27.
