Cement worth Rs 320 million exported from Kakarvitta

JHAPA: Cement worth Rs 320 million has been exported to India from the eastern border of Kakarvitta during the last fiscal year.

Ganapati Kandel, Information Officer at the Mechi Customs Office, stated that 49,959 metric tons of cement was exported from this port.

Although cement and clinker have been exported from various ports across the country for the past three years, this marks the first time such exports have occurred from Kakarvitta.

Cement traders have noted that the cement exported through this route is not produced in Jhapa.

Out of the eight cement industries in the district, three are currently closed.

Umesh Dalmiya, a central member of the Nepal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, stated that even the five operational industries are struggling.

Dalmiya explained that 40 percent of the local cement production remains unsold, leading to the closure of several industries.

He emphasized that these industries could only sustain themselves if at least 50 percent of their production is exported.
