KATHMANDU: The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has said it would shut down its Damak office by the end of 2020.
The UNHCR office was set up in Damak in 1992 with the objective to assist the Bhutanese refugees living in Jhapa and Morang districts.
The UNHCR has written to the government informing about its decision, according to Rastriya Samachar Samiti.
The office was set up some 27 years ago when hundreds of thousands of Nepali-speaking Bhutanese refugees came to Nepal following forceful eviction from the country.
Over 130,000 Bhutanese refugees have already been resettled in different countries including the US, Australia, Canada, Norway, New Zealand, Denmark, the Netherlands, and the UK under the resettlement program since 2012.
It should be noted that some 6,500 Bhutanese refugees still live in the camps.
