Mayor Balen opposes construction near Bagmati, Bishnumati, and Tukucha rivers

KATHMANDU: Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Balendra Shah (Balen), has urged party leaders and workers to avoid spreading confusion regarding construction regulations around the Bagmati, Bishnumati, and Tukucha rivers.

He emphasized that, according to the court order, no new structures can be erected in these areas.

Mayor Shah stated that the city avoid misleading the public about the restrictions on construction around these rivers.

He clarified that, following a Supreme Court order, Kathmandu Metropolitan City has communicated the construction prohibition areas—20 meters from the 40-meter boundary of Tukucha and the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers.

Mayor Balen emphasized that no new structures are allowed in these areas, but people are not barred from using their land as per the court’s ruling.

“No more structures can be built on this land. According to the court order, if the people are not prevented from using their land, the Nepal government can only acquire the land by paying compensation,” Mayor Shah added.

He urged party leaders and workers to avoid misinterpreting the court’s decision as a directive from the metropolis.
