Monsoon mayhem: Toll hits 203 in Nepal



KATHMANDU: The death toll from monsoon-induced disasters in Nepal since June 10 has risen to 203, according to Nepal Police.

The latest figures, updated through Sunday afternoon, reveal a widespread impact across various provinces.

In the Kathmandu Valley, three fatalities were reported. Koshi Province saw 28 deaths, Madhes Province reported eight, and Bagmati Province experienced 42 fatalities.

Gandaki Province recorded 56 deaths, Lumbini Province had 37, Karnali Province 13, and Sudurpaschim Province 16.

DIG and Spokesperson of Nepal Police, Dan Bahadur Karki, also reported that 251 individuals sustained injuries from landslides and floods during this period.

Specifically, 11 people were injured in the Kathmandu Valley, 38 in Koshi Province, 12 in Madhes Province, and 28 in Bagmati Province.

Injuries were also reported in Gandaki Province (47), Lumbini Province (19), Karnali Province (62), and Sudurpaschim Province (34).

Rescue operations by security agencies have successfully saved 210 individuals from vulnerable situations since the start of the monsoon.

However, 154 people remain missing, and search operations are ongoing, as noted by DIG Karki.

The disasters have caused extensive damage, including the inundation and destruction of 408 houses, 123 cowsheds, 52 bridges, six schools, and two government office buildings.

Additionally, 924 livestock have been lost, and 6,044 households have been displaced over the past two months.
