Education Minister calls for enhanced security at TU

KATHMANDU: Education Minister Bidya Bhattarai has urged the Home Minister to implement enhanced security measures at Tribhuvan University (TU) following recent threats and attacks targeting university officials and professors.

In a post on Facebook, Minister Bhattarai highlighted the growing insecurity at the university, reporting attempts to assault officials and threats against faculty members.

She expressed her concern that the situation has rendered the university unsafe and strongly requested that the Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak take immediate action to ensure security.

Minister Bhattarai’s decision to address the issue publicly on social media, rather than through official channels, has faced criticism.

Critics argue that such appeals are unorthodox given her position within the government.

In response to the criticism, Bhattarai acknowledged the feedback and clarified that her social media post was a necessary public appeal, not an impulsive action.

She emphasized that she has been actively coordinating with relevant authorities for the past five days.

In light of the security concerns, the Vice-Chancellor, Rector, Registrar, and other university officials are currently on leave.
