GP Koirala National Centre for Respiratory Diseases to be upgraded to Medical Science Academy

KATHMANDU: The Indian government has committed to upgrading the GP Koirala National Centre for Respiratory Diseases in Shuklagandaki Municipality, Tanahu district, into a medical science academy.

During a courtesy call on President Ramchandra Paudel on Friday, Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Naveen Srivastava, announced that the Centre would be expanded to a 1,000-bed facility after the completion of the ongoing construction of a 300-bed facility, according to President Paudel’s Press Advisor, Kiran Pokharel.

This upgrade follows an agreement signed between the Prime Ministers of Nepal and India, under which a detailed project report for the 300-bed facility was developed and construction advanced.

President Paudel has strongly advocated for expanding the Centre to 1,000 beds, emphasizing that a 300-bed capacity would be insufficient to meet the healthcare needs of the region.

The Centre was established in memory of former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress leader Girija Prasad Koirala.
