UML issues whip to ensure support for Sudurpaschim CM’s confidence vote

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML has issued a directive to its lawmakers to support Sudurpaschim Province Chief Minister (CM) Kamal Bahadur Shah in today’s crucial vote of confidence.

Shah, who was recently reappointed as Chief Minister, is seeking to solidify his position with the backing of the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML for his second term.

The UML has mandated its lawmakers to be present at today’s provincial assembly meeting and to vote in favor of CM Shah.

The Nagarik Unmukti Party is also part of the coalition supporting Shah, alongside the Nepali Congress and UML.

According to clause (2) of Article 168 of the constitution, a Chief Minister appointed in this manner must secure a vote of confidence from the House within one month.

In the 53-member Sudurpaschim Provincial Assembly, Shah requires the support of at least 27 members to secure a majority.

He currently has the backing of 18 members from the ruling Nepali Congress and 11 from UML, with additional support from the Nagarik Unmukti Party.
