KATHMANDU: A total of 170 people have lost their lives due to various monsoon-induced disasters over the past two months.
Additionally, 44 individuals have been reported missing, and 195 have sustained injuries from incidents such as floods, landslides, and inundation between June 10 and August 8.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the death toll from monsoon-triggered disasters has increased compared to last year.
During the previous monsoon, 72 lives were lost, 100 people were injured, and 28 went missing.
This monsoon, 2,998 households have suffered damage, with 197 houses completely destroyed and 170 partially damaged.
Furthermore, three public offices, five concrete bridges, 15 suspension bridges, and one hydroelectric plant have been affected by the disasters.
The NDRRMA recorded 169 flood incidents, 336 landslides, 228 cases of heavy rainfall, and 88 lightning strikes during the two-month period.
In addition, 471 other disasters—including fires, storms, animal attacks, wildfires, and snakebites—were reported, resulting in 19 fatalities.
Since the onset of the monsoon, the average rainfall across the country has been 171.7 millimeters.
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology had predicted above-average rainfall this monsoon.
Chandani Dodhara in Kanchanpur district recorded the highest rainfall in 77 years, with 624 millimeters.
A total of 8,252 personnel from Nepal Police, 5,817 from the Armed Police Force, and 4,708 from the Nepali Army were involved in search, rescue, and relief distribution operations during these disasters.
