PCN initiates nationwide creative journalism campaign

KATHMANDU: In a bid to enhance communication and promote positive journalism, the Press Council Nepal (PCN) is initiating a nationwide creative journalism campaign.

The move comes in response to the increasing negativity in various sectors and the disruptive impact of social media.

Bal Krishna Basnet, Chairman of PCN, emphasized the need for journalism to adopt a new approach to foster hope and effectiveness in society.

He highlighted the importance of creative journalism in countering the prevailing trend of negativity and misinformation.

During a recent interaction with writers and media professionals at the Council, Basnet remarked, “The media sector has unintentionally contributed to a narrative suggesting that every sector, individual, and organization is failing. Social media misuse has exacerbated this issue. It is crucial for the media to engage in creative journalism and challenge erroneous commentary.”

President Basnet urged journalists to question societal issues and explore potential solutions, rather than merely highlighting problems.

He noted, “While social media allows the public to voice concerns, journalists must go beyond this by offering creative solutions and guiding society towards hope. Negativity and pessimism are not pervasive everywhere; journalism should serve as a beacon of hope.”
