Guatemala to elect new president

GUATEMALA CITY: Guatemalans will elect a new president on Sunday who is likely to face a challenge after Guatemala agreed with the US to act as a buffer against illegal immigration.

The country’s outgoing government had in July signed an agreement with the US to make Guatemala a safe third country for migrants.

Voters will choose between conservative Alejandro Giammattei and his center-left rival Sandra Torres. (Agencies)
