KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has affirmed his commitment to endorse the Transitional Justice (TRC) Bill submitted to top leaders, including himself, on Wednesday from the current parliamentary session.
PM Oli emphasized that the report represents the final stage of the peace process and is crucial for providing a legal framework for reconciliation.
A task force submitted a report on amending the TRC Bill, 2071, to the leaders of Nepal’s three major parties, including Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
The report was presented to Prime Minister Oli, who is also the Chairman of the CPN-UML; Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba; and Chairman of the Maoist Center Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ at a program held at the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Singha Durbar.
The summary of the bill, currently under consideration by the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives, was submitted following discussions and facilitation on key issues.
The task force included Ramesh Lekhak, the Home Minister representing the Nepali Congress; Mahesh Bartaula, chief whip from the CPN-UML; and Janardan Sharma from the Maoist Centre.
“This agreement, which addresses reconciliation, compensation, and accountability for conflict-related issues, is a significant milestone in our peace process,” said Prime Minister Oli.
“We have endured a painful past, and while there have been positive changes, we must now complete the peace process. Having achieved consensus on these matters, there is no need for remnants of violence to persist,” he added.
PM Oli further stated that this consensus “aligns with the judgments of our Supreme Court, international standards, and is designed to be victim-friendly.”
“The passage of this bill will enable us to move forward, including forming a commission through mutual consultation,” he said.
Prime Minister Oli also emphasized that democracy should be upheld as a way of life, rejecting past practices of violence and lawlessness.
Meanwhile, Maoist Chairman Prachanda expressed his satisfaction with the achieved consensus and noted that past efforts to reach agreement had finally borne fruit.
He urged that the report be finalized through parliamentary processes to convey a message of peace, stability, and development to the Nepali people.
Similarly, Nepali Congress President Deuba praised the task force for setting an exemplary precedent, demonstrating that Nepalis can resolve their disputes independently.
