Chet Narayan Acharya becomes Lumbini Chief Minister

DANG: Chet Narayan Acharya, the Deputy Leader of the CPN-UML Parliamentary Party in Lumbini province, has been appointed as the Chief Minister.

Province Chief Amik Sherchan appointed Acharya on Monday under Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal.

This appointment follows the resignation of Chief Minister Jokh Bahadur Mahara on Sunday.

Subsequently, Province Chief Sherchan had called for the formation of a new government by 6 pm on Monday under Article 168 (2) of the Constitution.

Acharya’s claim to the Chief Minister’s position was based on an agreement between the UML and the Nepali Congress to form a provincial government under UML’s leadership.

Acharya was appointed as per the wishes of UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel.

Previously, UML Parliamentary Party Leader Leela Giri, who had served as Chief Minister for a brief period, had already gathered signatures from MPs to support his claim for the position.

However, the situation changed abruptly on Monday.

General Secretary Pokharel instructed over a phone call on Monday morning to appoint Deputy Leader Acharya as the Chief Minister instead of Giri.

Giri, who was preparing to claim the Chief Minister post, was taken aback by Pokharel’s decision.

As per the agreement with the Nepali Congress, Acharya has now assumed the role of Chief Minister of Lumbini Province.
