NC-UML agree to pick Leela Giri as Chief Minister in Lumbini

KATHMANDU: Lumbini Province is set to witness a change in government, with an agreement to appoint CPN-UML lawmaker Leela Giri as the new Chief Minister.

Following the formation of a new power coalition at the federal parliament, a similar government change is imminent in Lumbini Province.

Chief Whip of the UML, Tulsi Prasad Chaudhary, confirmed that an agreement has been reached between the Nepali Congress (NC) and the UML to advance Giri as Chief Minister.

Jokh Bahadur Mahara of the CPN-Maoist Center serves as the Chief Minister.

Mahara is set to face a vote of confidence in the Provincial Assembly today after the UML withdrew its support.

With both major parties, UML and NC, in opposition, certainly, Mahara will not secure the confidence vote.

Chaudhary mentioned that there is an agreement to form a government under the leadership of UML leader Giri following Mahara’s expected failure to secure the vote.

In the 87-member Provincial Assembly, 44 votes are required for a majority.

Presently, the UML has 29 members and NC has 27 members.
