KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chairman KP Oli has been appointed Prime Minister again.

President Ram Chandra Poudel appointed Oli on Sunday under Article 76(2) of the Constitution.

This marks Oli’s fourth term as Prime Minister. President Poudel had given a deadline of 5 pm on Sunday to form a new government under the same constitutional provision.

After Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ failed to secure a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives on July 12, President Poudel provided the time for submitting claims to form a new government.

On Friday, both the largest party in the Federal Parliament, the Nepali Congress, and the CPN-UML submitted their claim for Oli to be appointed as Prime Minister.

Oli was first elected Prime Minister by the Legislature-Parliament on October 2, 2015, and took the oath of office on October 12, 2015. He resigned on July 24, 2016, after addressing the Legislature-Parliament.

Oli was appointed Prime Minister for the second time in February 2018 and led the government until May 13, 2021.

He was appointed for the third time by then-President Bidya Devi Bhandari on May 13, 2021.

However, the Supreme Court declared his recommendation to dissolve the House of Representatives unconstitutional, leading to his ouster on July 12, 2021.

Oli had dissolved the House twice within six months during his tenure then.

Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba replaced Oli as Prime Minister with the support of a coalition including the CPN-Maoist Center on July 12, 2021.

Reversing history, Oli has become Prime Minister after three years, this time with the support of the Deuba-led NC, pushing Maoist Center Chair Dahal to the opposition bench in the parliament.
