BIRATNAGAR: Nepali Congress General-Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa stated that the constitution cannot be amended merely at the behest of a single political party.

Speaking briefly to media personnel at Biratnagar Airport today, Thapa emphasized that any constitutional amendment must not undermine the federal democratic republican system.

“The support and backing of all political parties are required to address the issues observed during the 10-year implementation of the constitution,” he said.

Thapa reiterated that the Nepali Congress would adhere to the seven-point agreement reached between the top leaders of the CPN (UML) and Nepali Congress.

He noted that the CPN (UML) would lead the government in the first phase according to this agreement.

Thapa mentioned that the Nepali Congress’ work execution committee had extensive discussions on the seven-point agreement and had accepted it.

He emphasized that the written agreement should not be taken lightly.

Nepali Congress Central Committee member Dr. Shashanka Koirala added that the opposition should remain strong, even though the Nepali Congress and CPN (UML) would form a national consensus government.

He warned that a weak opposition could lead to autocratic tendencies within the ruling side.

Koirala stressed the importance of correcting past mistakes and abiding by the constitution in its entirety, asserting that there would be no amendments to the fundamental spirit of the constitution.
