Legendary chef Thapa advancing to top three in global competition
Nepali chef Arjun Bahadur Thapa has been nominated among the top five in the ‘Favorite Chef, the American reality show’. Thapa, who originally hails from Tanahu, a district in the Gandaki Province, Nepal presently works for a well-known five-star hotel- The Chedi Andermatt in Switzerland. He started his culinary career as a cook from The Soaltee Hotel some 40 years back. Favorite Chef is a popular online competition of chefs and cooks across the world. He was nominated in the top five from among 100 participants. He said he needed more votes, more support, and encouragement from Nepalis and others so that he could advance to the top three. The 61-year-old culinary maestro has already spent 17 years in the UK and Switzerland continues to explore his skills and Asian cousins.
Two nabbed for taking money promising to settle 60 kg gold smuggling case
Police have arrested two persons accused of taking money under the pretense of settling a 60 kg gold smuggling case. A team from the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) arrested 63-year-old Krishna Prasad Sharma and 43-year-old Jhabindra Khatri. Sharma and Khatri allegedly took Rs 850,000 claiming they could resolve the case involving 60 kg of gold on behalf of police officers. Sharma, originally from Chhatredevi Rural Municipality-5 in Arghakhanchi and currently residing in Tarkeshwar, Kathmandu, and Khatri, from Tilottama Municipality-01 in Rupandehi, were arrested on Friday by the CIB team, which is continuing its investigation.
High Court upholds District Court’s detention order on Kali Bahadur Kham-related murder case
The Patan High Court’s Hetauda bench has ordered the detention of Kalibahadur Kham for trial in a murder case. On Friday, a division bench of judges Shanta Sedhai Sapkota and Merina Shrestha upheld the Chitwan District Court’s earlier decision, ordering Kham’s detention for trial. Kham, who was arrested in Kathmandu on April 2, was initially ordered into pre-trial detention by the Chitwan District Court on April 5. Kham’s legal team challenged this decision, filing a writ petition at the Patan High Court. However, the Patan High Court’s Hetauda bench has now confirmed the order for his detention.
Former DSP Sharma arrested
Former DSP of Nepal Police, KP Sharma, has been arrested on fraud allegations. The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) apprehended him. According to CIB sources, he was arrested in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation. DSP Sharma, who retired about nine years ago, was often surrounded by controversy during his service.
Police confiscate 712 sacks of chemical fertilizer
The Parsa District Police have confiscated 712 sacks of chemical fertilizer worth Rs one million. The urea fertilizer, brought illegally from India, was discovered hidden in a store. Each sack weighed 50 kg, according to Dipak Bharati, Deputy Superintendent of Police. The police acted on a tip-off to make the seizure. In connection with the illegal supply of the chemical fertilizer, the police have apprehended 62-year-old Gyan Bahadur Mahato from Kawasoti Municipality-9 of Nawalparasi. Legal action has been initiated against him. The confiscated fertilizer was handed over to the Customs Office in Birgunj on Friday.
RSP forms three-member committee to select ambassadors
The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) is now tasked with selecting two ambassadors and has formed a three-member committee to pick the names. The committee consists of Dr. Swarnim Wagle, Sobita Gautam, and Shishir Khanal. According to party sources, the committee has prepared a Terms of Reference (ToR) to select suitable candidates for the positions. Of the 11 vacant posts, the government now requires ambassadors for Qatar, Israel, and Portugal.
Maoist Centre has magical seat in parliament; Govt will serve full term: PM Dahal
CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has assured that the current coalition government will continue until the end of the House of Representatives (HoR) term. Speaking at the inauguration of the seventh national general convention of the Tamang National Liberation Front in Kathmandu on Saturday, PM Prachanda urged everyone not to doubt the coalition’s stability. He attributed the government’s endurance to his party’s historical contributions, current needs, and its significant number of seats in the HoR. “There is no need for concern over the party’s fewer seats,” he said, emphasizing that the government is stable due to what he referred to as a “magical number” in parliament that allows the coalition to manage through various strategies.
