KATHMANDU: Distribution of Melamchi Drinking Water in Kathmandu Valley has been halted starting Friday.

The Melamchi Drinking Water Development Committee announced the suspension due to the heightened risk of floods in the Melamchi River with the onset of the monsoon season.

Consequently, the tunnel of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project has been closed.

The government traditionally closes the tunnel during the monsoon season to minimize disaster risks to the project, reopening it once the monsoon ends.

This year, the monsoon arrived three days earlier than usual, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

Typically beginning around June 13th in Nepal, the monsoon season is expected to conclude by the first week of October.
