Farmers protest before DDC headquarters over unpaid dues, police intervene (In pictures)

KATHMANDU: Officials and members of milk cooperative associations surrounded the Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) headquarters in Lainchaur on Wednesday, protesting against unpaid dues amounting to billions of rupees.

For the second time, the protesters attempted to encircle the central office of the DDC but were stopped by police.

The police detained union officials and activists who had gathered to demonstrate.

Farmers have been protesting for a prolonged period, citing non-payment for their milk by both the DDC and private dairies.

They allege that despite providing milk for a long time, they have not received their payments, pushing them to take drastic measures.

Meanwhile, CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula raised the issue in the House of Representatives, urging the government to address the farmers’ demands.

He highlighted the plight of dairy farmers who have been forced to protest about collecting their overdue payments.

Bartaula pointed out that farmers are owed around Rs 2 billion by the DDC and approximately NPR 3 billion by private dairies, leaving them in financial distress.

He criticized the police intervention during the farmers’ sit-in at the DDC, calling for the government to meet the farmers’ legitimate demands without delay.
