KATHMANDU: Gyanendra Shahi, a lawmaker and chief whip of the Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), asserted that the USA insulted Nepal by denying a visa to cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane.
Speaking at the parliament meeting on Sunday, Shahi emphasized that denying a visa to Lamichhane is an affront to the entire country.
“The Patan High Court has acquitted Lamichhane, the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has lifted his suspension, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) has allowed him to join Nepal’s T20 World Cup squad, but the USA still denies him a visa,” said Shahi, adding that this action goes against the principles of Panchsheel and peaceful coexistence.
The USA has denied a visa to national cricketer Lamichhane, who was preparing to represent Nepal in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, currently being hosted by the USA and West Indies.
Reportedly, efforts were made by the Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, and Sport Ministry to secure Lamichhane’s visa, but the US Embassy in Kathmandu denied the request.
