Janamat Party to stake claim to post of Madhesh Province’s CM today

KATHMANDU: The Janamat Party, backed by five other parties, is set to stake its claim on the post of Chief Minister (CM) in Madhesh Province on Friday.

Earlier, the five political parties agreed to appoint the Chief Minister from the Janamat Party, led by CK Raut.

According to the agreement reached on Thursday evening, while Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav of the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal (led by Upendra Yadav) is preparing to take a vote of confidence by June 10, the five parties agreed to elect a Janamat Party candidate as the Chief Minister.

The Loktantrik Samajwadi Party and Unified Socialist have also joined the five-party alliance, but these two parties have not signed the agreement.

Sharad Singh Yadav, the spokesperson of the Janamat Party, confirmed that there was an agreement among the five parties on forming a new government in Madhesh Province.

However, only the CPN-UML, Maoist Center, and Janamat Party have signed the agreement.

The Unified Socialist and Loktantrik Samajwadi have not yet signed.

UML parliamentary party leader Saroj Yadav told Khabarhub that it has been decided to share the ministries by mutual agreement among the parties participating in the government and to continue dialogue with other parties that are positive about forming a new joint government.

In the 107-member provincial assembly, 54 seats are required to form a new government.

Currently, there are 24 lawmakers from UML (excluding the Speaker), 13 from the Janamat Party, nine from the CPN (Maoist Center), eight from the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, and seven from the CPN (Unified Socialist).

The Nepali Congress holds 22 seats, while the Janata Samajbadi Party has 18 seats in the provincial assembly.
