PM Dahal commits to uphold press freedom and support journalists’ welfare



KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has reiterated his commitment to upholding press freedom, stating that there will be no control or curtailment on the freedom of the press.

Speaking at a program organized today on the occasion of the 27th General Convention of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), he emphasized the importance of self-regulation within the media industry.

Prime Minister Dahal urged the press fraternity to safeguard press freedom while also ensuring responsible journalism to prevent the dissemination of false information.

He highlighted the significant role of press freedom in the country’s political landscape, emphasizing its crucial role in achieving democratic milestones.

Referring to the constitutional guarantee of press freedom in Nepal, Prime Minister Dahal assured that no entity could infringe upon this fundamental right.

He acknowledged the indispensable contribution of the journalism sector in shaping the federal democratic republic and called for continued vigilance to safeguard the achievements made.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Dahal outlined the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of journalists, including provisions for sustenance allowances for senior and disabled journalists.

He emphasized the government’s stance on recognizing the media as a national service-oriented industry, aiming for its professional and institutional development.

Addressing the challenges faced by the media industry, including financial constraints exacerbated by various crises, Prime Minister Dahal pledged concrete steps for capacity building, career development opportunities, and social security for journalists.

He acknowledged the need for legislative and structural measures to address the issues facing the journalism sector.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Dahal reassured the journalism community of the government’s seriousness in addressing concerns related to press freedom, freedom of expression, and the right to expression.

He affirmed that upcoming policies, programs, and budgets would prioritize addressing the needs and challenges of the media industry, including the establishment of a training academy for journalists and measures to tackle financial crises within the sector.
