Process to eliminate political influence in education sector to commence soon: Education Minister Shrestha

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Sumana Shrestha, has announced the initiation of a campaign aimed at eradicating political interference in the education sector.

During today’s session of the National Assembly’s Federalism Strengthening and National Concerns Committee, Minister Shrestha outlined plans to commence the drive to eradicate political influence in education, starting from Tribhuvan University (TU).

“The lack of tangible results in the education sector is primarily due to political interference,” she asserted.

Minister Shrestha highlighted the ongoing recruitment process for members of the Service Commission as part of the efforts to address this issue.

In the meeting convened to review the progress and status of the education sector, Suresh Adhikari, Secretary of the Ministry of Education, provided insights into the current fiscal year’s budget allocation and future strategies.

Adhikari emphasized the necessity of augmenting the education budget and advancing the school reconstruction plan in areas affected by the Jajarkot earthquake.

“We are preparing to allocate additional funds for school repairs in earthquake-affected regions,” he stated.

During the session, Members of Parliament, including Jaga Prasad Sharma, Indira Devi Gautam, and Rajendra Lakshmi Gaire, offered suggestions for enhancing the education sector.

Committee Chairman Sonam Galzen Sherpa cited examples of non-politicized community schools and underscored the imperative of enhancing educational standards.
