No significant hurdles in BRI implementation process: Foreign Minister Shrestha



KATHMANDU: Foreign Minister Narayankaji Shrestha returned home after a week-long visit to China, where he declared the success of his diplomatic mission.

Addressing the media at Tribhuvan International Airport on Monday, Minister Shrestha emphasized the seamless implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), indicating no obstacles in its execution.

Expressing his satisfaction with the trip, Shrestha underscored that the discussions during the visit had been fruitful, particularly regarding the BRI.

He emphasized that there were no significant hurdles in the implementation process, signaling a positive outlook on Nepal’s involvement in the initiative.

Regarding the ongoing debate over whether to accept assistance from China under the BRI as grants or loans, Shrestha clarified that a final decision would be reached in the subsequent phase of negotiations.

However, he reiterated Nepal’s preference for grant-based assistance, emphasizing its importance in the country’s development agenda.

Furthermore, Shrestha disclosed efforts to enhance collaboration with the Chinese private sector, advocating for increased investment in Nepal.

He highlighted discussions aimed at streamlining tourist facilitation to Mansarovar, including agreements to initiate a direct bus service between the two nations.

Additionally, Foreign Minister Shrestha revealed positive deliberations regarding boosting productivity in Nepal’s agriculture sector, reflecting China’s willingness to support Nepal’s economic development initiatives.

He claimed that his visit to the northern neighbor underlined a constructive dialogue and a shared commitment to advancing mutual interests, particularly in the context of the BRI and bilateral cooperation.
