Nepal’s public debt reaches Rs 2.288 trillion

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s public debt has reached Rs 2.288 trillion.

According to data released by the Public Debt Management Office on Sunday, Nepal has yet to repay Rs 1.185 trillion in domestic debt and Rs 1.227 trillion in foreign debt.

Nepal has taken an additional loan of Rs 218.86 billion in the last 8 months of the current fiscal year 2080/81.

The government has made payments on the loan, with Rs 146.64 billion towards domestic debt and Rs 28.86 billion towards foreign debt until the current month of Falgun.

In the last eight months of the ongoing fiscal year, the government has increased domestic debt by Rs 163.31 billion and foreign debt by Rs 55.55 billion.

According to the data, the current outstanding domestic debt is Rs 1.185 trillion, while for foreign debt, it is Rs 1.227 trillion.

Out of the loans taken, the government has only paid Rs 126.03 billion in principal, while the interest payment stands at Rs 49.47 billion, as per the data.
