Gold smuggling case: Former Vice President Pun’s son Dipesh arrested in Kathmandu
Dipesh Pun, the son of former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, has been arrested in connection with a case involving cooperative fraud and gold smuggling. Sources close to Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane reported that police apprehended Pun from Dhobighat on Friday. Dipesh is alleged to have exploited his father’s position to facilitate gold smuggling from China.
Case filed against former Vice President Pun’s advisor, Jiwan Gurung in gold smuggling case
A case has been filed against Jiwan Gurung, the foreign affairs advisor to former Vice President Nanda Bahadur Pun, at the Kathmandu District Court in connection to a high-profile gold smuggling case. The case was filed following an investigation conducted by the Tribhuvan International Customs Office, culminating in the filing of charges against Gurung today. Authorities are seeking a substantial penalty of Rs 1.04 billion along with a prison sentence of 5 years against Gurung.
AIG Shyamlal Gyawali appointed as CIB Chief
The government appointed Nepal Police AIG Shyamlal Gyawali as the new head of the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB). The decision to appoint Gyawali as the CIB chief was made upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs at a meeting of the cabinet held today. The current CIB Chief, AIG Kiran Bajracharya, has been transferred to the Nepal Police Headquarters Operations Department amidst controversy surrounding a gold smuggling case.
PM Dahal receives Gold Smuggling Probe Commission Report, urges swift action against culprits
Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane presented the findings of the Gold Smuggling Probe Commission to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday. The meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar, where Minister Lamichhane handed over the report. In response, PM Dahal directed Minister Lamichhane to ensure that individuals involved in the smuggling, as well as those who aided the perpetrators and officials found to have been negligent during the investigation, face appropriate consequences.
HoR meeting adjourned till Sunday
The parliamentary session abruptly disrupted on Friday has been adjourned until Sunday following opposition from the main opposition party, Nepali Congress (NC). During the House of Representatives (HoR) meeting, NC lawmakers protested and demanded the resignation of Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane for his alleged involvement in the cooperatives related frauds. In response to the ongoing protest, Speaker Devraj Ghimire postponed the meeting.
Microfinance victims and govt representatives ink six-point agreement
Microfinance victims and government representatives have signed a six-point agreement to address the concerns of the people affected by the microfinance loans. On Friday, a government team and representatives of the microfinance victims convened at the Ministry of Finance for discussions. The agreement letter has been signed by Narayan Prasad Risal from the Ministry of Finance, who heads the Financial Management and Institutions Division, and Punaram (Maniram) Gyawali, the coordinator of the negotiating team representing the protesters. In recent days, there have been protests by microfinance victims in Kathmandu.
Nepal ranks 146th on Human Development Index: UNDP report
Nepal has been ranked 146th on the Human Development Index (HDI) by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), according to its latest report. The HDI report indicates that Nepal achieved an HDI value of 0.610, positioning the country at 146th among 193 countries and territories worldwide. This value marks a slight increase of 0.010 compared to 2021, resulting in Nepal moving up three places from the previous year. The HDI serves as a comprehensive measure to assess the average achievement in three fundamental dimensions of human development: longevity, education, and standard of living.
Internal translocation of Rhinos underway in Chitwan National Park
The Chitwan National Park has initiated the internal relocation of six rhinos starting today. This decision comes amidst an increased population of the endangered species in the western region of the park, prompting officials to redistribute them to the eastern belt. Chief Conservation Officer of Chitwan National Park, Dil Bahadur Purja Pun, stated that the translocation of rhinos commenced on Friday, with a workforce of 60 individuals, including elephants, technical personnel, Nepal Army personnel, and other officials mobilized for the task.
Nepal-Ireland T20 and ODI cricket match fixtures announced
The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has revealed the schedule for the upcoming Nepal-Ireland T20 and ODI matches. The fixtures include two T20 matches between Nepal and Ireland, as well as three T20 matches and three ODI matches between Nepal ‘A’ and Ireland.
