Man arrested for vandalizing temple statue in Sarlahi

SARLAHI: A person who vandalized a statue at Jhilimilia Temple in Malangwa Municipality 8 of Sarlahi, Janakpurdham, has been arrested.

Rakesh Sitta, a 33-year-old resident of Malangwa Municipality 8, stands accused of this act.

Sarlahi police took Rakesh into custody on Wednesday and have charged him with religion-related offenses.

SP Shyam Kumar Mahato, the Chief of Sarlahi Police, stated that Rakesh was arrested based on evidence found at the scene, where the statue was discovered vandalized on Tuesday night.

Following the arrest, the Malangwa District Court granted the police an extension of five days to further investigate and take action against Rakesh.

In response to the destruction of the temple idol, locals in Malangwa closed down the market area in protest.

Under Article 1 of the Criminal Code of Civil Code 2074, damaging a religious or sacred place carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment and a fine of up to 50,000 rupees.
