Govt commits to enforce agreement with usury victims

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane has pledged full enforcement of the agreement reached between the government and usury victims.

A comprehensive four-point agreement was brokered between the two parties, with the establishment of a probe commission being a key component.

Upon arrival at the negotiation venue, DPM Lamichhane emphasized the government’s recognition of the hardships faced by usury victims. Despite unforeseen challenges, he assured that the government stands united with the victims in their pursuit of justice and rights.

Lamichhane acknowledged that while the agreement marks a significant step forward, the struggle for justice must continue beyond this point. Expressing regret for the prolonged suffering endured by victims of loan-sharking, he reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing their grievances.

The DPM outlined that the probe commission would provide recommendations to the government, serving as a framework for further action.

Furthermore, Lamichhane disclosed that Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been briefed on the agreement, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to uphold its terms.

However, Lamichhane requested some time to work alongside victims of predatory lending to ensure the effective implementation of the pact. He encouraged them to remain vigilant throughout this process.

As per the agreement, the Ministry of Finance will be urged to allocate funds in the upcoming budget for the provision of financial assistance, relief, and compensation to marginalized groups, safeguarding them against falling prey to usury.
