KATHMANDU: Following extensive discussions between the government and the loan sharking victims, a four-point agreement has been forged on Monday evening.
The culmination of the talks occurred after the protest, which spanned 23 days and involved loan sharking victims marching from Jhapa’s Kakdvitta to Kanchanpur’s Mahendranagar, finally concluded with successful negotiations with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane played a pivotal role in facilitating the agreement.
As a result of the accord, Home Minister Lamichhane went to Bhrikutimandap, the site where the loan sharing victims have been staging their protest, to personally apprise them of the terms of the agreement.
During the discussions held at the Ministry of Home Affairs, consensus was reached on four key points.
Among these, an agreement involves the establishment of a commission tasked with investigating unfair transactions related to loan sharking.
As outlined in the agreement, the government is committed to establishing this commission, which will be responsible for investigating and providing recommendations for action.
It is anticipated that the commission will deliver its report to the government within a three-month timeframe.
Furthermore, a mutual decision has been made to re-evaluate the recent complaints received by the preceding commission.
These complaints were forwarded to the Nepal Police subsequent to the commission’s formation.
Additionally, there is an accord to propose a review and amnesty process in accordance with existing laws for individuals who have faced fines, suspensions, or imprisonment in cases related to loan sharking.
