MTPD collects over Rs 310 million revenue in fine

KATHMANDU: The Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD) has collected revenue of Rs 310.56 million in a fine from the Kathmandu Valley in the last fiscal year 2018/19 for the violation of traffic rules.

MTPD Chief and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basanta Kumar Pant shared that a total of 481,075 small and big vehicles in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur districts were fined for the violation of the rules.

Common forms of traffic rules violations were driving under the influence of alcohol, disregard for lane discipline and traffic signals, parking vehicles in no-parking zones, wanton use of horn among others.

In fiscal year 2017/18, the MTPD had collected around 300 million in fine in various cases of violations. “We have been imposing fine to erring vehicle drivers- who do not comply with the traffic rules and who do not maintain road discipline,” shared SSP Panta.

Among various 40 units of MTPD which oversees traffic management in the Valley, Durbar Marg Traffic Post has collected the highest revenue from the offenders in the last fiscal year after MTPD’s office at Ram Shah Path.

Durbar Marg Traffic Police Office In-charge and Inspector Daya Krishna Bhatta shared that his Office had booked more than 35,000 offenders and collected over Rs 200 million in fine. “This reflects the activeness, dedication and honesty of the traffic police working round the clock to ensure road discipline and stern action against the offenders,” he observed.

There are altogether 1,400 traffic police personnel working in the MTPD while over 900,000 vehicles ply the roads in the Kathmandu Valley on a daily basis.
