KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre)’s Standing Committee meeting today witnessed a resolute stance from party leaders, asserting that the party should assert its claim on the National Assembly’s (NA) Chairperson post, citing its status as the largest party in the NA.
Speaking to media representatives at the party’s central office in Parisdanda following the meeting, Vice-Chairperson and Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota revealed that a majority of the party’s leaders expressed the view that relinquishing the NA Chairperson post would be unwarranted, given the party’s significant representation in the NA.
The NA Chairperson position is set to be vacant from March 3, prompting discussions among party members on the best course of action.
While today’s meeting primarily focused on deliberating recent political developments and national issues, Sapkota clarified that no definitive decisions were reached regarding the allocation of responsibilities among party leaders. However, discussions were held regarding potential alternatives for distributing roles within the party.
The forthcoming meeting scheduled for Wednesday is expected to finalize decisions in this regard, Sapkota added.
Although the meeting touched upon the party’s plans, including the upcoming Terai-Madhesh Campaign slated to commence on March 14, and other proposed programs, no concrete resolutions were made today, Sapkota informed.
Additionally, participants deliberated on the Nepali Congress’s recent Mahasamiti meeting, reviewing the reports endorsed and opinions expressed during the gathering, Sapkota stated.
The Standing Committee is slated to reconvene on Wednesday, with Party Chairperson and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ slated to address the assembly. Originally scheduled to conclude today, the meeting has been postponed to tomorrow due to PM Dahal’s hectic schedule, sources indicate.
