KATHMANDU: The Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee under the House of Representatives (HoR) faced mounting pressure from parliamentarians to expedite the finalization of the Transitional Justice Bill (TRC) in a meeting held at the Singha Durbar today.
During the meeting, Chief Whip of Nepali Congress, Ramesh Lekhak, urged the Committee to conclude the deliberations on the Transitional Justice Bill within a week.
Emphasizing the urgency, he proposed a target date of March 2 for the finalization, considering the pressing concerns voiced by victims, civil society, and the media.
Lekhak underscored that since only a few points in the bill remain contentious, concerted efforts should be made to discuss and reach a final decision during the upcoming meeting.
Additionally, CPN-UML whip Mahesh Bartaula recommended the formation of a sub-committee within the Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee.
This sub-committee would be tasked with conducting thematic discussions to expedite the finalization of the transitional justice bill.
Bartaula also highlighted the importance of a sub-committee to ensure a comprehensive approach to the committee’s work.
The parliamentarians, recognizing the gravity of the matter, pushed for a swift resolution to address the longstanding concerns related to transitional justice in the country in today’s meeting.
