NC President Deuba calls for deliberation on Constitution amendment

KATHMANDU: Former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has indicated the initiation of discussions on amending the Constitution during the ongoing Mahasamiti meeting.

Addressing the inaugural session of the party’s Mahasamiti meeting, which commenced in Godawari, Lalitpur, on Monday, Deuba highlighted the need to start deliberations on amending the Constitution without adversely affecting its basic principles and fundamental aspects.

“The Constitution has been in force for eight years. In the course of its implementation, issues and complexities have arisen. It is necessary to initiate discussions on amending the Constitution without compromising its political structure and fundamental aspects,” said the NC President.

He claimed that NC’s political nature has played a vital role in determining the constitutional structure.

“The present Constitution of Nepal has been established under NC leadership. The constitution has ensured a parliamentary system of governance based on multiparty competitive federal democracy, as per the recognition of the NC guidelines,” he asserted.

Deuba emphasized the importance of establishing the acceptability and ownership of the Constitution among the people and presented arguments in favor of the Constitution becoming a subject of public trust and confidence.
