TU VC appointment: Lawmaker Sumana seeks PM’s views

KATHMANDU: Lawmaker Sumana Shrestha has raised concerns about the appointment of the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Tribhuvan University (TU) in a meeting of the parliamentary Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee.

Seeking transparency, she questioned the Minister of Education’s performance and called for a direct response from the Prime Minister regarding the VC appointment.

During the meeting on Monday, lawmaker Sumana of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), expressed reservations about the Minister of Education’s actions and emphasized the need for a clear explanation from the Prime Minister on the matter.

This comes after the Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology, Suresh Adhikari, asserted that there was no political interference in the VC appointment at Tribhuvan University.

Sumana, however, remained skeptical and stressed the importance of the Prime Minister’s involvement.

She questioned, “How can someone with a record of intellectual theft be considered morally fit for a position that demands integrity? Why wasn’t this thoroughly examined?”

The role of a Vice Chancellor is academic, and we cannot afford to have someone involved in intellectual theft in such a position, she noted.

Continuing her critique, she remarked, “The Minister’s performance is under scrutiny, and we need the Prime Minister to address this matter openly. We cannot accept decisions made behind closed doors. Theft is theft, and we need accountability.”

MP Sumana Shrestha’s demand for the Prime Minister’s opinion underscores the growing controversy surrounding the VC appointment at Tribhuvan University and the need for a thorough and transparent evaluation process.
