Snowfall delights Jumla farmers: Late but welcome blanket of snow brings relief to winter crops

JUMLA: A welcome change has enveloped Jumla as snowfall graces the region, starting this morning.

Notably later than in previous years, the snowfall has blanketed the district, including the headquarters Khalanga, with approximately half a foot of snow.

Marking the inaugural snowfall of this year’s winter season, locals express their joy, particularly the farmers who had sown winter crops.

Parvati Budha, a resident of Tila Rural Municipality-1, shared the sentiments of the farming community, expressing happiness despite the delayed snowfall.

Concerns had arisen among farmers due to the absence of snow earlier in the winter, fearing a potential drought.

The Agricultural Development Office reports that farmers who planted barley and wheat crops are now significantly relieved by the belated snowfall.

Gopal Rokaya, an agricultural entrepreneur, anticipates positive outcomes as he mentions that the snowfall will facilitate the planting of apple and walnut trees.

However, the flip side of this joyous occasion is the disruption in air services in Jumla and Upper Karnali due to the heavy snowfall.

The late but much-needed snowfall brings a mixed bag of emotions, combining relief for farmers and challenges for local services.”
