Women Commission urges govt to take action on unlawful children’s homes

KATHMANDU: The National Women Commission (NWC) has drawn the attention of the government to take action against the guilty after carrying out investigation on illegally operated children’s homes.

Issuing a press release on Thursday, the NWC laid emphasis on the need to operate children’s homes in a systematic manner because it is unsafe for the children to take shelter at such facilities.

Minimum standards must be met by the children’s homes, it added.

The NWC had carried out monitoring of Gokarneshwor municipality-based Lab Prasad Sudhar Sangh, a children’s home, on November 21, 2023, based on the information that it was running illegally and the children were in unsafe condition.

It then recommended the bodies concerned to immediately rescue the children from there.

After the monitoring, the report prepared by the Commission mentioned that the children home had involved the children physical, sexual and criminal activities, which it argued, was sheer violation of children’s rights.
