Chitwan reports four scrub typhus deaths with 163 infections in current fiscal year



CHITWAN: Chitwan reports four deaths from scrub typhus in the current fiscal and of them, one is within from the district and remaining three from outside the district, according to the Health Office, Chitwan.

As said by office vector control inspector, Ram KC, so far in the current fiscal year, there are 163 confirmed cases of scrub out of 3,254 tests and among the infected, four succumbed to the disease that is caused by bacteria called Orientia tsutsugamushi.

Among the infected, 88 are within from Chitwan and remaining from other districts.

Last fiscal year, 519 scrub typhus infected were identified among tests conducted on 3485 who visited the district-based hospitals for treatment. All the infected recovered following the treatment.

Scrub typhus bacteria do no directly transmit to human, but infects mites found in vegetation and the infected mites, primarily, cigar to other animals and humans.

Severe fever, reddish eyes, coughing, vomiting, stomach pain, loose bowels, breathing difficulties, joint and muscle pain, skin rashes and sometimes the appearance of black post at the site of the bite are among the symptoms of scrub typhus.

Similarly, the number of reported dengue cases in the district since July 17 is 1,615 following the 21,298 tests. One death has been reported from the disease and the death was outside from Chitwan.
