Former PM Bhattarai advocates for consensus-driven leadership and national government formation

KATHMANDU: Babu Ram Bhattarai, the ex-Prime Minister and Nepal Samajbadi Party leader, has called for a shift towards ‘consensus-driven leadership’ by proposing the formation of an all-party national government.

Speaking at an event organized by the Nepali Congress to commemorate National Reconciliation Day, Bhattarai expressed concerns over the challenges faced by the current Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, who leads a unity government consisting of 10 political parties. Bhattarai noted the difficulty in satisfying all parties and predicted a potential loss of leadership for PM Dahal in the near future. He questioned the feasibility of achieving good governance and prosperity in such circumstances.

Bhattarai suggested the creation of a government that includes representatives from all major political parties, led by an individual respected and acknowledged by all. He emphasized the need to develop comprehensive programs and policies for effective implementation.

However, Bhattarai acknowledged the challenge of selecting a leader acceptable to all, given the diverse aspirations and contenders, including the current PM Dahal.

Addressing the event attended by PM Dahal, UML Chair KP Sharma Oli, and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Bhattarai stressed the importance of providing opportunities to new leaders and faces. He highlighted the necessity for a change in both the system and leadership, citing a lack of progress and development during the frequent government changes led by existing leaders.
