KATHMANDU: For the first time in the country, the Bir Hospital has installed ultramodern Tomotherapy for the treatment of cancer patients.

Officials said that Tomotherapy is a state-of-the-art tool to deliver radiation treatment against cancer disease.

Hospital’s Director Dr Santosh Paoudel said that this is the first of its kind used in Nepal to damage the cancer cells in the human body.

Currently, two patients are receiving the Tomotherapy service. The hospital started radiotherapy service eight years ago to deliver radiation treatment against cancer disease.

“It takes just 10 minutes to make the patient ready if we could handle the equipment well, which is now taking 45 minutes,” said the Chief of Oncology Department at the Bir Hospital, Prof Dr Bibek Acharya.

Acharya added that up to 50 patients could be given the service on a daily basis once the medicos were efficient to handle the equipment.
