CPN (US) gears up for NA election, summons secretariat meeting

KATHMANDU: In anticipation of the upcoming National Assembly election, the CPN (Unified Socialist) has called for a crucial Secretariat meeting scheduled for December 14.

During this two-day gathering, party leaders will formulate criteria for selecting candidates to represent the party in the forthcoming National Assembly election.

The decisions made in the Secretariat meeting will undergo further scrutiny and approval in subsequent meetings of the Standing Committee and Politburo, ensuring a comprehensive and collective decision-making process.

General-Secretary Ghanashyam Bhusal highlighted that the meeting’s agenda includes discussions on essential preparations, coordination strategies, and facilitation plans from the party’s end for the upcoming House of Representatives by-election in Illam. The party aims to ensure a robust presence and active participation in this electoral process.

As per Article 86 (3) of the Constitution of Nepal, the term of office of one-third of the NA members is about to expire on March 3, 2024, and there is a legal provision that the election must be organised 35 days before the positions go vacant (January 29, 2024) in line with the National Assembly Member Election Act, 2075.

The term of office of the total 20 NA members (19 elected ones and one nominated from the government) is expiring on March 3, 2024.

The government has decided to hold the NA election on January 25 next year.
