KATHMANDU: Minister for Health and Population Mohan Bahadur Basnet said that his ministry was delivering as per the expectations of the people.

At a program organized on the eve of the joint annual review of the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health and Population here today, Minister Basnet claimed that reformative measures were taken in the health sector since he assumed the charge of health minister.

The annual joint meeting is taking place in Kathmandu from November 23-24.

“The health sector has taken leaps and bounds with everyone’s support. We should not repeat the old mistakes and evaluate our works through annual review,” asserted Basnet.

Assuring that there would not be a budget crunch for good works, the Minister assured that his Ministry was working towards the construction of physical structures, arrangement of medical equipment, and skilled human resources among others.

Furthermore, he shared that homework was underway to increase vacancies in the public healthcare facilities to render quality healthcare services conveniently and permission was already granted to create temporary posts in some public hospitals.

According to him, there has not been any increase in the number of vacancies in the health sector since 1997.

He demanded that the education policy should be revised to produce human resources in the medical sector as well as to attract foreign students to pursue medical studies in Nepal.

According to him, the process had been taken forward at the policy level so as to retain medical human resources at home and prevent them from flocking abroad. He informed that hospitals having 100 to 300 beds could obtain approval from the government to teach nursing and paramedic courses.

Similarly, Dev Kumari Guragain, secretary at the Ministry of Health and Population, drew everyone’s attention towards the Integrated Health Information Management System in all hospitals and health institutions.

Likewise, Kapil Prasad Timalsina, Chief of the System, said that it appeared that the health sector was not taking strides when the hospitals, health institutions, and council did not furnish information on time.
