NC initiates shelter construction support teams for earthquake-hit areas

KATHMANDU: Ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has taken a proactive stance to aid earthquake victims by spearheading housing initiatives.

During a gathering of office bearers and officials at Dhumbarahi on Monday, NC decided to dispatch a dedicated team comprising engineers, carpenters, and managerial support to Jajarkot and Rukum West for shelter construction.

Min Bahadur Bishwakarma, Head of the Publicity Department, announced the endeavor: “We’re dispatching 25 teams of volunteers to Jajarkot and Rukum West to erect shelters for those affected by the earthquakes. Each team will include an engineer, a carpenter, and a manager, with ten individuals constituting a team.”

The NC has committed to providing labor for shelter construction, recognizing the dire situation faced by earthquake victims amidst the cold weather. Additionally, they’ve urged the government to swiftly allocate relief funds for the shelter construction.

Bishwakarma emphasized the prioritization of building shelters, especially for elderly and maternity families grappling with the harsh weather conditions. To date, ten earthquake victims have tragically succumbed to the cold.

The Congress aims to construct a total of 1000 shelters across Jajarkot and Rukum West.

“Our focus is on providing shelter to high-risk groups, such as pregnant women and the elderly, who are vulnerable due to the earthquakes,” he stressed, highlighting the party’s commitment to covering expenses for the volunteers involved in shelter construction.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka, alongside General Secretary Gagan Thapa, conducted an on-site visit to understand the plight and challenges faced by those affected.

Furthermore, the NC has extended its support by contributing Rs 5 million to the government fund earmarked for aiding earthquake victims.
