KATHMANDU: The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has taken a proactive step in addressing the government’s decision to ban TikTok in the country.

In a recent development, the NTA sent a letter to the Singapore-based TikTok company.

Deputy Director Achuta Nanda Mishra confirmed the communication, emphasizing that it was not a response to TikTok’s earlier letter to the Authority.

“We have not responded. We have written a letter to TikTok,” clarified Mishra.

In the letter addressed to TikTok, NTA urged TikTok to engage in discussions with the Government of Nepal regarding the decision to ban the platform.

Mishra highlighted that the decision to shut down TikTok was made by the Cabinet of the Nepal Government, making it essential for TikTok to collaborate directly with the government on the matter.

On the other hand, the NTA Chairman, Purushottam Khanal, stated that a reply had indeed been sent to TikTok.

“Yes, we have sent a reply to TikTok,” he confirmed, revealing that the letter urged TikTok to support the government’s decision and implement the Cabinet’s directive.

The government’s move to ban TikTok in Nepal earlier this week has sparked extensive debates on social media platforms.

In response to the ban, ten petitions were filed at the Surepeme Court on Friday challenging the government’s decision.

The hearing for these petitions is scheduled for November 20, shedding light on the ongoing legal developments surrounding the TikTok ban in Nepal.
