Dimag Karab producers postpone screening amidst grievances over unequal showings in cinema halls

KATHMANDU: The producers of the film “Dimag Karab” have announced the postponement of its screening, citing insufficient showings in cinema halls.

Director Nischal Basnet conveyed that the decision to halt the film’s screening comes in response to a disparity in the number of showings compared to Indian films. In a Facebook Live session, Basnet stated that if the film is not given comparable screening slots by tomorrow (Thursday), they will cease screenings from Friday.

“Even with enthusiastic audiences, should we settle for fewer showings?” questioned Basnet. He emphasized that until a conducive environment to safeguard their investment is ensured, the film will not be exhibited conventionally. Instead, alternative methods will be explored for showcasing the film.

Basnet clarified that the decision is prompted by the perceived lack of priority given to Nepali films by theaters. “This is not a reaction borne out of anger; it is about seeking equitable conditions. Like any business venture, we anticipate positive outcomes,” he explained. The director added that an official announcement detailing their decision would be made public soon.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation, Basnet lamented that despite positive word-of-mouth, cinema halls were not providing adequate showings. He asserted that Nepali films should receive an equal number of screenings compared to foreign productions. “Our primary demand is a 50/50 percent revenue share for the producer as long as the film continues to be screened,” concluded Basnet.
