Police launch investigation into assaults at NRNA Central Office in Kathmandu



KATHMANDU: The police have initiated a thorough investigation into a series of violent altercations and assaults involving various factions of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA).

On Tuesday, journalist Om Sharma was subjected to a physical assault at the NRNA’s central office located in Baluwatar, sparking a wave of controversy.

Sharma had accompanied the president of the disgruntled faction, RK Sharma, to the central office. Om Sharma, who currently resides in Belgium and is actively engaged in journalism, promptly lodged a formal complaint with the police in response to the assault.

Journalist Sharma registered his complaint at the Durbarmarg police circle, alleging that a group of individuals, which included UML Politburo member Mahesh Basnet, a former minister, had forcefully entered the NRNA office and instigated the attack.

Subsequently, NRNA President-elect Badri KC also filed a complaint against RK Sharma on Wednesday. The police have initiated an investigation in light of these multiple complaints.

Sources within the police department have confirmed the review of CCTV footage and assured that decisive actions will be taken once an accurate account of the incident is obtained.

The legitimacy of the NRNA’s governing authority has been cast into doubt, as RK Sharma’s faction has unequivocally declared the election of Badri KC as president to be illegitimate. This has sparked a contentious dispute within the NRN, with one faction vehemently rejecting the election results and alleging that Badri’s victory was secured through misconduct.
