KATHMANDU: Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ held talks with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and main opposition leader KP Sharma Oli at Baluwatar today.

The meeting, convened to expedite the long-stalled transitional justice (TJ) process, underscored the pressing need for finalizing the Transitional Justice Bill, as said by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat.

Of particular focus was the pending Transitional Justice Bill, the subject of intensive deliberations during the meeting.

Notably, this interaction follows the Prime Minister’s persistent efforts to forge a consensus on the peace process, including previous engagements with opposition leader Oli.

However, Oli has reiterated that the delay in completing the peace process is not due to his stance but rather attributable to Prime Minister Dahal’s actions.

The recent visit of UN Secretary-General Guterres to Nepal witnessed discussions with key political figures, urging swift progress in the peace process.

Addressing the joint House on Tuesday, he emphasized prioritizing the needs of the victims, underscoring the urgency of completing the remaining peace process stages.

Unfortunately, the progression of the peace process has hit a stalemate in the committee, with political parties entrenching themselves in positions serving their vested interests.

The Law, Justice, and Human Rights Committee’s failure to reach a consensus on the Commission for Inquiry, Truth, and Reconciliation (Third Amendment) Bill on Disappeared Persons has further compounded the issue.

Despite the formation of an 11-member sub-committee within the Law Committee to finalize the bill, it has only managed to submit an incomplete report, thus prompting Prime Minister Dahal to actively engage with Deuba and Oli in an attempt to reach a consensus.

With mounting international pressure, the imperative of expediting the pending peace process stages has become all the more apparent.
