Police nab man with counterfeit thousand rupee notes

KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have apprehended an individual in possession of counterfeit currency from Lalitpur on Sunday evening.

According to SP Navraj Karki of District Police Range Lalitpur, an arrest was made in Lalitpur-5, Lagankhel Bus Park involving forged banknotes.

The individual taken into custody is 32-year-old Kumar Waiba, a resident of Makwanpurgadhi Rural Municipality who is presently residing in Lalitpur. This arrest occurred on Sunday evening and was executed by a Lagankhel Police team. Upon searching Waiba, they discovered 11 counterfeit 1,000 Rupee notes.

Waiba had attempted to use the fake currency at a retail shop in Lagankhel, particularly for the purchase of cigarettes. However, upon realizing the fraudulent nature of the money, the shopkeeper promptly alerted the police.

Subsequently, the police detained Waiba and confiscated additional counterfeit notes from him. Preliminary investigations indicate that those in possession of counterfeit currency are using it to make small purchases and then receive genuine currency as change.

An in-depth investigation into this matter is undergoing, the police said.
