President Paudel stresses adherence to constitutional processes in a meeting with RSP leaders

KATHMANDU: President Ram Chandra Paudel addressed concerns raised by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) delegation, led by party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane, regarding the release of certain prisoners on Constitution Day.

President Paudel emphasized his commitment to constitutional processes and the government’s decisions.

President Paudel reiterated that once a matter has gone through all requisite procedures and received approval from the Council of Ministers, the President’s role is not to deny it.

He pointed out that, in a parliamentary system, the government is responsible for decisions endorsed by the Council of Ministers.

Sources claimed that President Paudel had questioned the delegation’s understanding of the constitution and parliamentary system.

He urged them to address their concerns within the parliamentary framework, emphasizing that accountability lies with the Prime Minister and Home Minister, who are part of the same parliament.

President Paudel also highlighted the constitutional provision allowing him to grant amnesty at his discretion but clarified that for the remaining 670 individuals, the process must follow constitutional arrangements and the Council of Ministers’ decision.

Furthermore, President Paudel reminded the RSP leaders that if they disagree with the law, the parliament has the authority to amend it.

He expressed concern that the current situation poses a threat to the constitution, the republic, and the political system established after 70 years of struggle.

Addressing the RSP leaders, President Paudel urged them to consider the potential consequences of undermining the system and the republic, emphasizing their responsibility to protect it.

In response, Lamichhane, Chairman of RSP, defended their right as concerned citizens to approach the President and draw the government’s attention to issues they deemed important.
