Govt makes key policy decisions on issues ranging from social reforms, economic review, and public welfare

KATHMANDU: In a recent Council of Ministers meeting convened on Friday, the government made a series of significant policy decisions spanning various sectors, reflecting its commitment to reforms, economic considerations, and the welfare of its citizens.

Firstly, the government initiated tax system reform by forming a committee under the coordination of former minister Bidyadhar Mallik. This committee is tasked with enhancing the efficiency and fairness of the tax system.

To address the increasing demand for sugar and stabilize the sugar market, the Salt Trading Corporation and Food Management and Trading Company Limited have been granted permission to import 10/10 thousand metric tons of sugar each. Notably, these imports come with a 50% duty exemption.

Furthermore, the government approved the Irrigation Policy, 2080, which will guide the nation’s approach to water resource management and agricultural sustainability.

Recognizing the cultural significance of jewelry gifted by the President and its importance to the nation’s heritage, a working group will be formed to study existing laws related to jewelry distribution. The goal is to make the process more dignified and organized on Constitution Day. Consequently, the distribution of jewelry will be temporarily postponed while the group conducts its review, with a report expected within three months.

In the realm of citizenship requirements and procedures, the Council of Ministers approved the Nepal Citizenship (Third Amendment) Regulations, 2080, which could have implications for the nation’s citizenship framework.

Additionally, the government greenlit the presentation of a bill to the Federal Parliament. This bill is aimed at establishing legislative arrangements, demonstrating the government’s commitment to enhancing transparency and legal frameworks.

In the domain of international relations, Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s visit to China received official approval, underlining the importance of diplomatic relations and international cooperation.

Lastly, the government decided to take measures to ensure justice for the inhabitants of the buffer zones of Shuklaphanta National Park.
