NHRC urges govt to make public whereabouts of missing ones

KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reminded the government to make public the status of those who disappeared in the period of armed insurgency.

The NHRC urged the government to reveal the whereabouts of those who disappeared by implementing the recommendations NHRC furnished in this regard.

The government needs to work in line with the Supreme Court verdict, NHRC suggestions and international human rights standards to amend the related Act for ensuring justice and reparation to the victims.

NHRC spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokhrel demanded that the government amend the Act on transitional justice as per international standards and recommendations by human rights institutions so that conflict victims would be provided justice.

It is worrying that the whereabouts of those subjected to enforced disappearance during armed insurgency is still unknown despite the passage of 17 years since the signing of comprehensive peace agreement in Nepal, spokesperson Dr Pokhrel said, adding that 186 recommendations were furnished to the government so far to make public the status of those missing in the insurgency.

Moreover, as many as 821 complaints are under consideration at NHRC. But status of the implementation of NHRC recommendation is not satisfactory at all.
